On World Mental Health Day today, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan joined his daughter Ira Khan to share about the need to focus on mental health and break the stigma around therapy.
The father-daughter duo spoke at length about reaching out to trained professionals when one is going through stress or battling mental health challenges.
In the video, Aamir and Ira explained how one goes to school to learn subjects like maths, or hire carpenters and plumbers to fix errands at home. Similarly, we also head to the doctor’s when we are unwell physically. Aamir added that just like how we seek help for these tasks from those trained to do the job, we should also reach out to professional therapists without hesitation, if one is going through a tough time emotionally.
Speaking in Hindi, the actor said that he has benefitted from therapy over the years. He added: “Friends, I and my daughter have benefitted from therapy for years now). So if you are going through stress or any kind of tension, reach out for help from trained professionals. There is no shame in that. All the best.”
Ira has been very open about her mental health journey in recent times. Earlier this year, in a series of social media posts, she revealed that she was diagnosed with clinical depression a few years ago. She also opened up about how the divorce of her parents, Aamir and Reena Dutta, had affected her.
Ira also launched the Agastu Foundation to provide mental health support for those in need.
